How I Got Started with Yoga Nidra
As this virus progressed and we hit the summer... cases exploding... I could feel this frantic energy vibration permeating the air. It has urged me to expand my private Yoga Nidra practice and offer this beautiful experience to everyone.
I began my journey to the practice of Yoga Nidra many years ago. My very dear friend John Vosler introduced me to this amazing practice. As I watched him devote his life to the teachings of this practice and share his journey with me, I was blown away after each session how people would come up to him and share their experience of how much they got out of each time they joined him for a guided meditation. I knew what the sessions had done for me but I had thought maybe it was because he and I are so close and knowing him made the experience that much more profound. Then I realized after joining him on retreats and many meditations over the years that this practice is for any and everyone... adults, teens, kids.
There have been scientific studies done on what exactly is happening in the brain during a Yoga Nidra Meditation. It is amazing to have scientific proof of something you feel so strongly about that you know can benefit so many people. The positive case studies on the benefits of Yoga Nidra in people with PTSD and addiction is so encouraging to know that maybe I can help someone find a way to peace and calm. So… eventually after raising my kids I was able to find the time to start my own journey on diving deeper into the teachings and getting certified to share the practice of Yoga Nidra with family, friends and anyone who wanted the experience.
Over this past year, after watching everyone struggling with so much unrest in every aspect of our lives, I started offering free mediations on Zoom to help anyone who was struggling to find even just a few minutes of peace in so much chaos of the year. Word of mouth has begun to spread and I’m seeing new people join in on my open Sunday evening meditation session.
It’s been wonderful to see people knowing they need something and taking that special time for themselves to just lie down and be still for a bit. To listen to the silence. That stillness, that silence is who you are. We must drop below the mind and all that chatter in the mind to get to the quiet. To the silence. That is where our true self is revealed.
I hope anyone who is reading this finds their way to an I AM Yoga Nidra guided meditation experience whether that is joining one of mine or one offered by John Vosler or by any other I AM Yoga Nidra facilitator. Hope to see you one Sunday on Zoom soon or in my studio or at a retreat when we can all be together again safely.
Jai Bhagwan,
Suzanne
